Senator John Cullerton began his career in law by serving as an Assistant Public Defender for Cook County, while also teaching at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy in Boulder, Colorado. Senator Cullerton served as a public defender for five years before entering private law practice in Chicago, which he continues today as a partner of Chicago's law firm of Fagel Haber. Senator Cullerton serves as the Co-Chairperson of the Illinois Senate Judiciary Committee and serves on the Rules, Financial Institutions, and Insurance & Pensions Committees.
In 1978, Senator Cullerton was first elected to the Illinois General Assembly and served as a member of the House of Representatives for 12 years. Throughout Senator Cullerton's 6-term career in the Illinois House, he served as the Speaker Pro Tempore and Democratic Floor Leader. In 1992, Senator Cullerton was elected to the Illinois Senate, representing the state's 6th Legislative District.
Senator John J. Cullerton received a J.D. from Loyola University's School of Law in 1974. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Loyola University of Chicago in 1970.
