Justice Callum practiced law with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office from 1973 to 1978; the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, Deputy Chief, Criminal Division from 1978 to 1980; and in general practice with the firm of Callum, Anderson & Deitsch from 1980 to 1986. He also served as President of the DuPage County Criminal Defense Association. He was appointed Associate Judge in the 18th Judicial District in 1986.

In 1994, the Illinois Supreme Court appointed Justice Callum Circuit Judge. He was elected Circuit Judge in 1996 and selected as Chief Judge in 1999. He was appointed to the Special Supreme Court Committee on Capital Cases. On February 1, 2001, Justice Callum was appointed to the Appellate Court of Illinois, Second District by the Supreme Court and was elected to the appellate court in 2002.

Justice Callum received his J.D. Degree in 1973 from Chicago-Kent College of Law serving on the Law Review and graduating with Distinction. He received a B.A. Degree in 1966 from St. Joseph's College, Rennselaer, Indiana, graduating with Honors.
